Coming forward must have been terrifying. But Jesus wanted her story to be told, not to embarrass her but to honor her faith and restore her publicly. Healing in secret is good, but recognition brings full restoration.

Shaking with fear, the woman came forward and poured out her whole story in front of everyone: twelve years of suffering, one touch of faith, and instant healing. Jesus gave her the stage.

The scholarly reading

The woman, realizing she cannot remain hidden (ouk elathen), comes tremousa ('trembling') and falls before Jesus. She publicly declares (apēngeilen) the reason for her touch and her parachrēma ('immediate') healing enōpion pantos tou laou ('in the presence of all the people').

Language and setting

Her trembling reflects fear of reprisal for touching a holy man while unclean, but Jesus' gentle response transforms her fear into freedom. The public testimony serves to remove her social stigma: the crowd now knows she is healed and clean.

Significance

Realizing she could not hide, the woman came forward trembling and told everyone, Jesus, the crowd, the whole story of her suffering and her instant healing through touching His cloak.

45“Who touched Me?” Jesus asked.

46But Jesus declared, “Someone touched Me, for I know that power has gone out from Me.”

47Then the woman, seeing that she could not escape notice, came trembling and fell down before Him. In the presence of all the people, she explained why she had touched Him and how she had immediately been healed.

48“Daughter,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”

49While He was still speaking, someone arrived from the house of the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” he told Jairus. “Do not bother the Teacher anymore.”
