Luke 8:46

Power Over Chaos

But Jesus declared, “Someone touched Me, for I know that power has gone out from Me.” Luke 8:46 · Berean Standard Bible
What It Means

Luke 8:46, in plain English

Jesus insisted that someone had touched Him on purpose. 'I felt power go out from Me,' He said. He knew exactly what had happened.

Why it's here

Jesus was not playing detective. He already knew what happened. He wanted the woman to come forward, not to shame her but to bless her publicly and complete her healing with a personal word.

Who's speaking

Jesus speaks to the crowd, insisting on what He sensed.

Where it sits in the story

Jesus would not let it go. He felt power leave His body and He knew someone had reached out in faith. He was not going to let a secret miracle stay secret.

A Closer Look

The scholarly reading

Jesus insists ēpsato mou tis ('someone touched Me'), explaining egnōn dynamin exelēlythuian ap' emou ('I perceived power having gone out from Me'). The perfect participle exelēlythuian indicates the power had already gone out and its effects remained, suggesting an automatic response to genuine faith.

Language and setting

The concept of dynamis ('power') flowing from Jesus raises questions about the nature of healing power: it responds to faith but remains under Jesus' sovereign awareness. This is not magical; Jesus is fully conscious of the transaction.

Voice

Jesus speaks with conviction, insisting that a deliberate, faith-filled touch occurred.

Significance

Jesus pressed the point: someone had touched Him intentionally, and He knew it because He felt healing power flow out of Him. This was no accident but a divinely ordained encounter.

In context

Luke 8:44–48

44She came up behind Jesus and touched the fringe of His cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped.

45“Who touched Me?” Jesus asked.

46But Jesus declared, “Someone touched Me, for I know that power has gone out from Me.”

47Then the woman, seeing that she could not escape notice, came trembling and fell down before Him. In the presence of all the people, she explained why she had touched Him and how she had immediately been healed.

48“Daughter,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you. Go in peace.”

Read all of Luke 8 — A storm, a legion of demons, a bleeding woman, and a dead girl — Jesus moves through a world of chaos and brings order with a word or a touch.
