They arrive at the chōra tōn Gerasēnōn ('region of the Gerasenes'), located antipera ('opposite/across from') Galilee. This eastern shore territory was predominantly Gentile, as evidenced by the pig herds mentioned later.

Language and setting

The geographical shift to Gentile territory is theologically significant in Luke's narrative: Jesus' power and ministry extend beyond Jewish boundaries. The location across the lake symbolizes crossing cultural and religious barriers.

26Then they sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, across the lake from Galilee.

27When Jesus stepped ashore, He was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothing or lived in a house, but he stayed in the tombs.

28When the man saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before Him, shouting in a loud voice, “What do You want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You not to torture me!”
