Luke 8:25, in plain English

Jesus asked them, 'Where is your faith?' And they asked each other in astonishment, 'Who is this? Even the wind and waves obey Him!'

Why it's here

Jesus did not scold them for being scared of the storm. He challenged them for not trusting Him in it. And their awed response shows they were beginning to grasp just how extraordinary He truly was.

Jesus challenges His disciples, and they respond with awe and wonder.

Where it sits in the story

After the storm went silent, Jesus asked one simple question: where is your faith? The disciples, more stunned than before, whispered to each other: who is this man that creation itself obeys?

The scholarly reading

Jesus' question pou hē pistis hymōn ('where is your faith?') challenges their lack of trust despite His presence. Their response tis ara houtos estin ('who then is this?') is a christological question echoing Psalm 107:25-29, where only YHWH controls the sea.

Language and setting

The disciples' question pushes the reader toward a divine christology: the one who commands wind and water exercises the prerogatives of Israel's God. Their fear (phobēthentes) paradoxically increases after the miracle rather than during the storm.

Significance

After calming the storm, Jesus asks a pointed question about their faith. The stunned disciples ask each other who this man could possibly be, since even wind and water obey His commands.

23As they sailed, He fell asleep, and a windstorm came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.

24The disciples went and woke Him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!”

25“Where is your faith?” He asked.

26Then they sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, across the lake from Galilee.

27When Jesus stepped ashore, He was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothing or lived in a house, but he stayed in the tombs.
