They said to each other, 'Weren't our hearts on fire while He talked with us on the road and opened up the Scriptures to us?'
Looking back, they realized God had been at work in them the whole time. That warm stirring you sometimes feel when reading the Bible? That's the same fire.
The two disciples marvel to each other about what they experienced on the road.
Their hearts had been burning all along — they just didn't know why until that moment. Sometimes you feel something stirring deep inside before you can name it.
The disciples reflect that their hearts were burning (Greek: kaiomenē, 'being set on fire') within them as Jesus opened the Scriptures during their journey.
The burning heart motif evokes Jeremiah 20:9, where God's word is like a fire within. The verb diēnoigen ('opened') applied to Scripture parallels the opening of their eyes in verse 31.
The two disciples reflect on the inner experience of Jesus' scriptural teaching during the walk.
In retrospect, they realize that the encounter with the risen Christ through Scripture preceded and prepared the moment of visible recognition. The Word kindled what the bread revealed.
30While He was reclining at the table with them, He took bread, spoke a blessing and broke it, and gave it to them.
31Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Jesus—and He disappeared from their sight.
32They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us as He spoke with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”
33And they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem.
34and saying, “The Lord has indeed risen and has appeared to Simon!”
