Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Jesus—and He disappeared from their sight. Luke 24:31 · Berean Standard Bible
Suddenly their eyes were opened and they recognized Him — and then He vanished from their sight.
The moment they saw Him clearly was the moment He disappeared. From that point on, they would know Him by faith, not by sight.
Luke captures the breathtaking instant when recognition and departure happen at once.
Can you imagine that moment? After hours of walking and talking, suddenly it all made sense — and then He was gone. But He left them with something better than His visible presence: burning hearts and open eyes.
Their eyes were opened (Greek: diēnoichthēsan, divine passive — 'were opened by God') and they recognized Jesus, who then became invisible (aphantos egeneto) from them.
The opening of their eyes forms an inclusio with verse 16 where their eyes were held shut. The verb aphantos ('invisible, vanished') occurs only here in the New Testament.
The narrator describes the climactic moment of recognition followed by Jesus' sudden disappearance.
Recognition and disappearance happen simultaneously — Jesus is known in the breaking of bread and then entrusts His ongoing presence to faith rather than sight.
29But they pleaded with Him, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.”
30While He was reclining at the table with them, He took bread, spoke a blessing and broke it, and gave it to them.
31Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Jesus—and He disappeared from their sight.
32They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us as He spoke with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?”
33And they got up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem.
