They go inside the tomb and the body of the Lord Jesus is not there. He's gone. The spices they brought are useless — because you don't need burial spices for someone who's alive.
This is the moment everything changes. An empty tomb, a missing body, and a world about to be turned upside down by the most incredible news in history.
Luke narrates the discovery that launched a faith that changed the world, using Jesus' most honored title at this pivotal moment.
They came prepared for death and found life. The tomb is empty. The body isn't there. In this absence is the greatest presence the world has ever known. The story doesn't end in a grave — it begins at an empty one. And nothing will ever be the same.
Entering the tomb, they ouch heuron (did not find) to sōma tou kyriou Iēsou (the body of the Lord Jesus). Luke's use of the full title 'Lord Jesus' — his most reverential designation — at the moment of the empty tomb discovery is theologically significant.
The empty tomb alone does not prove resurrection — it is the necessary condition, not the sufficient explanation. Luke's use of 'Lord Jesus' (a post-resurrection title) at this point in the narrative reflects the faith perspective from which he writes.
Luke narrates the climactic discovery — the body is not there — using the most exalted title for Jesus, blending historical narration with theological confession.
They enter and the body is gone. The women came to anoint a corpse and found an empty space. This absence is the most eloquent presence in history. The body of the Lord Jesus — Luke uses His full title in this moment — is simply not there. Death could not hold Him.
1On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared.
