When they arrive, they find the heavy stone already rolled away from the tomb entrance. Something has happened that they never expected.
This is the first clue that the world has changed overnight. A stone that should be sealed shut is wide open.
Luke describes the first discovery with restraint, letting the surprise build naturally as the women approach the open tomb.
Imagine walking to a sealed grave and finding it open. Your heart would stop. That's what these women experienced. The stone that should have been firmly in place is rolled aside. Something has happened here — something no one was prepared for.
They find ton lithon apokekyismenon (the stone rolled away) from the mnēmeiou (tomb). The passive voice (apokekyismenon) implies divine agency — the stone was rolled away by an external force. The perfect tense indicates a completed action with ongoing results.
Tomb stones were typically large, heavy discs rolled along a groove. Finding it displaced was the first sign that something extraordinary had occurred. The passive voice hints at God's action while maintaining narrative reserve.
Luke narrates the first discovery — the displaced stone — using language that suggests divine intervention without explicitly stating it.
The first thing they see is wrong: the stone is already moved. Heavy tomb stones don't roll away by themselves. The passive voice whispers what the narrative will soon shout: God has acted. The tomb that was sealed on Friday is open on Sunday, and everything is about to change.
