The scholarly reading

Learning Jesus falls under Herod's exousia (jurisdiction), Pilate sends Him to Hērōdēs (Herod Antipas), who happened to be in Jerusalem — likely for the Passover festival. This episode is unique to Luke's Gospel.

Language and setting

Herod Antipas is the son of Herod the Great and the tetrarch who executed John the Baptist. His presence in Jerusalem for Passover provides the jurisdictional opportunity Pilate exploits.

Luke narrates Pilate's political maneuvering, transferring Jesus to Herod's authority as a convenient way to avoid rendering a verdict himself.

Significance

8When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased. He had wanted to see Him for a long time, because he had heard about Him and was hoping to see Him perform a miracle.

9Herod questioned Jesus at great length, but He gave no answer.
