Joseph takes Jesus' body down, wraps it carefully in fine linen, and places it in a brand-new tomb carved from rock where no one had ever been buried.
After all the cruelty and shame, Jesus' body is treated with dignity and care by a man who loved Him from the shadows.
Luke describes Joseph's tender act with quiet reverence, honoring the love and respect this man showed in Jesus' darkest hour.
After the brutality of the cross, finally someone treats Jesus' body with gentleness. Joseph wraps Him in fine linen and places Him in a brand-new tomb. It's a final act of love and respect from someone who couldn't save Jesus' life but could honor His death.
Joseph takes down the body, wraps it in sindoni (fine linen), and places it in a mnēmati laxeutō (rock-hewn tomb) where oudeis ēn oupō keimenos (no one had yet been laid). The new tomb fulfills the Isaianic Suffering Servant prophecy of burial 'with the rich.'
The fine linen and new tomb indicate a wealthy man's burial — fulfilling Isaiah 53:9, 'He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in His death.' The unused tomb ensures no confusion about the identity of the resurrected body.
Luke narrates the burial with dignified detail, describing Joseph's careful, reverent handling of Jesus' body.
With tender care, Joseph takes down the body, wraps it in expensive linen, and lays it in his own unused tomb carved from rock. The man who in life had 'no place to lay His head' now receives a dignified burial from a secret disciple who has found his courage.
