The Innocent Condemned

The sun goes dark, and the massive curtain in the temple — the one that separated people from God's presence — tears right down the middle. The barrier between God and humanity is broken.
That temple curtain said 'you can't come in.' Jesus' death ripped it open and said 'now you can.' It's one of the most significant moments in all of scripture.
Luke records two signs that interpret Jesus' death: the sun's failure shows creation's grief, the torn veil shows heaven's invitation.
For centuries, a massive curtain stood between people and God's presence. No one could pass through it except one priest, once a year. But at the moment of Jesus' death, that curtain tears in two. The message is unmistakable: the way to God is now wide open, and Jesus' death is what opened it.
The sun eclipsed (tou hēliou ekleipontos) and the katapetasma tou naou (veil of the temple) was torn (eschisthē) down the middle (meson). This was the inner veil separating the Holy of Holies from the Holy Place.
The temple veil, reportedly 60 feet tall and immensely thick, symbolized the barrier between God and humanity. Its tearing — from top to bottom (Mark 15:38) — signifies God opening direct access to His presence through Jesus' death.
Luke narrates two supernatural signs simultaneously: the darkening of the sun and the rending of the temple veil, both pointing to the cosmic significance of Jesus' death.
Two signs converge: the sun fails and the temple veil rips in two. The veil that for centuries said 'you cannot approach God directly' is torn open from top to bottom. What priests and sacrifices could only point to, Jesus' death accomplishes: direct, open access to God.
43And Jesus said to him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”
44It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over all the land until the ninth hour.

46Then Jesus called out in a loud voice, “Father, into Your hands I commit My Spirit.” And when He had said this, He breathed His last.
47When the centurion saw what had happened, he gave glory to God, saying, “Surely this was a righteous man.”
