The Last Night
So they all asked, “Are You then the Son of God?” Luke 22:70 · Berean Standard Bible
They all demand, 'Are You the Son of God then?' Jesus replies, 'You say that I am.' It's a 'yes' that forces them to own what they're hearing.
Jesus doesn't deny it. He confirms their conclusion while making them take responsibility for what they're about to do with it.
Jesus speaks with dignified restraint, affirming the truth about Himself while letting them decide what to do with it.
They asked the biggest question in human history: 'Are You God's Son?' And Jesus essentially says, 'You've said it yourselves.' The truth is now in their hands. What they do next — condemn the innocent Son of God — becomes their responsibility, not their ignorance.
They all press further: 'Sy oun ei ho huios tou theou?' (Are You then the Son of God?). Jesus responds ambiguously: 'Hymeis legete hoti egō eimi' (You say that I am) — affirming the claim while placing responsibility for the conclusion on them.
The shift from 'Son of Man' to 'Son of God' shows the council's theological inference: if Jesus sits at God's right hand, He claims divine status. Jesus' response neither denies nor explicitly confirms but forces them to own their interpretation.
The full Sanhedrin asks the decisive question about divine sonship, and Jesus responds with a formula that affirms while making them accountable for the conclusion they've drawn.
The council takes Jesus' enthronement claim to its logical conclusion: 'Then You're the Son of God?' Jesus' enigmatic response — 'You say that I am' — is an affirmation wrapped in a challenge. He confirms their interpretation while placing the weight of that conclusion on their own shoulders.
68And if I ask you a question, you will not answer.
69But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.”
70So they all asked, “Are You then the Son of God?”
71“Why do we need any more testimony?” they declared. “We have heard it for ourselves from His own lips.”
