The Last Night

A little later, someone else says, 'You're one of them too.' Peter denies it again: 'Man, I am not.' The lies are getting easier to say.
Peter could have walked away after the first denial. Instead, he stays and the denials deepen. Each one takes him further from who he really is.
Peter speaks with increasing desperation, now denying not just knowing Jesus but being connected to His followers at all.
This is how it works with lies — each one makes the next one easier. Peter has now denied both his relationship with Jesus and his identity as a disciple. He's dismantling his own life piece by piece, driven by fear he can't control.
A second accuser — heteros (another person, masculine) — identifies Peter: 'Kai sy ex autōn ei' (You also are one of them). Peter responds with 'Anthrōpe, ouk eimi' (Man, I am not). The denial escalates from not knowing Jesus to denying group membership.
The second denial comes 'after a short time' (meta brachy), suggesting Peter remained by the fire despite the first exposure. Each denial deepens the breach — first disowning Jesus personally, now the community.
Peter responds to a second accuser with another denial, now distancing himself not just from Jesus but from the entire group of disciples.
Peter had a chance to leave after the first denial but stayed. Now someone else identifies him, and the denial goes deeper — from 'I don't know Him' to 'I'm not one of them.' Each lie builds on the last, drawing Peter further from the truth and from himself.
56A servant girl saw him seated in the firelight and looked intently at him. “This man also was with Him,” she said.
57But Peter denied it. “Woman, I do not know Him,” he said.
58A short time later, someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.”
59About an hour later, another man insisted, “Certainly this man was with Him, for he too is a Galilean.”
60“Man, I do not know what you are talking about,” Peter replied.
