The scholarly reading

Jesus recalls the earlier mission of the Seventy-two (Luke 10:4) when they traveled without ballantiou (purse), pēras (bag), or hypodēmatōn (sandals). Their answer 'outhenos' (nothing — they lacked nothing) confirms God's provision during that protected period of ministry.

Language and setting

This callback creates a contrast between two eras of ministry: the period of favor when the disciples were welcomed (Luke 9-10) and the coming period of hostility and rejection.

Significance
