The scholarly reading

Jesus directly contradicts Peter with a solemn prediction: the alektōr (rooster) will not phōnēsei (crow) today until Peter has denied (aparnēsē) knowing Jesus three times. The specificity — today, rooster, three denials — leaves no room for ambiguity.

Language and setting

Jesus' prophecy serves multiple purposes: it warns Peter, it later triggers his repentance (22:61), and it validates Jesus' prophetic authority when it is fulfilled exactly as stated.

Voice

Jesus responds to Peter's boast with gentle but devastating specificity, replacing Peter's confident prediction with an uncomfortably precise one of His own.

Significance

Against Peter's bold claim of loyalty unto death, Jesus sets a very different prediction: before the rooster crows, Peter will deny even knowing Him — not once but three times. The contrast between Peter's self-image and Jesus' knowledge of him is stark.

32But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith will not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”

34But Jesus replied, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know Me.”
