The Last Night

Jesus says this is His last Passover until it's fulfilled in God's kingdom — He's looking past the suffering to the ultimate celebration that's coming.
Even at His darkest hour, Jesus sees beyond the cross to the victory celebration on the other side. He's not just enduring — He's anticipating.
Jesus speaks with both solemnity and forward-looking hope, framing His sacrifice within the bigger story of God's coming kingdom.
There's bittersweet beauty here. Jesus says goodbye to a tradition He has loved, but He also points ahead to something even better — a future feast in God's fully arrived kingdom. His last dinner points to an eternal banquet.
Jesus declares He will not eat the Passover again 'until (heōs hotou) it is fulfilled (plērōthē) in the kingdom of God.' This eschatological reservation points to the messianic banquet where Passover finds its ultimate realization.
The 'fulfillment' language transforms Passover from backward-looking memorial into forward-looking promise. Every subsequent Christian Eucharist carries this eschatological anticipation of the consummated kingdom.
Jesus reinterprets the Passover with messianic authority, declaring this as His final celebration until the kingdom arrives in fullness.
Jesus frames this meal as both ending and beginning. The old Passover reaches its last observance in its original form; the next time Jesus eats it, everything the Passover pointed to will be fully realized in God's kingdom.
14When the hour had come, Jesus reclined at the table with His apostles.
15And He said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before My suffering.
16For I tell you that I will not eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”
17After taking the cup, He gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves.
18For I tell you that I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on until the kingdom of God comes.”
