When the time came, Jesus sat down to dinner with His apostles. This is it — the Last Supper, the meal that would change everything.
They're reclining at the table in the traditional way free people celebrated Passover. The irony is powerful: Jesus reclines in freedom while heading toward chains.
Luke marks this sacred moment simply, letting the weight of the occasion speak for itself.
After all the preparation, the hour arrives. Jesus gathers His closest friends around a table for a meal that looks like any other Passover dinner — but this one will be remembered for all of history. Something old is about to become something radically new.
When the hōra (appointed hour) came, Jesus anepesen (reclined) — the traditional Passover posture of free people — with His apostoloi (apostles). Luke uniquely uses 'apostles' rather than 'disciples' here, emphasizing their commissioned role.
Reclining at table was the posture of freedom mandated for Passover, symbolizing Israel's liberation from Egyptian slavery. The 'hour' carries Johannine overtones of the divinely appointed moment.

12And he will show you a large upper room, already furnished. Make preparations there.”
13So they went and found it just as Jesus had told them. And they prepared the Passover.
14When the hour had come, Jesus reclined at the table with His apostles.
15And He said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before My suffering.
16For I tell you that I will not eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”
