Signs Before the End
For they all contributed out of their surplus, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on.” Luke 21:4 · Berean Standard Bible
Jesus explains: everyone else gave from what they had left over. But she gave everything she had to live on — out of her poverty, not her abundance. That's what makes it the biggest gift.
The rich ruler couldn't give up his wealth (18:22-23). This widow gives up everything without being asked. She's the hero of the whole section — the one who actually trusted God completely.
Jesus reveals why her gift was the greatest: it cost her everything, while the others' gifts cost them nothing.
The difference isn't in the coins — it's in the cost. They gave from overflow; she gave from emptiness. They gave without feeling it; she gave everything and trusted God for tomorrow.
Jesus explains: the wealthy gave from their surplus (perisseuontos), but the widow gave from her poverty (hysterēmatos) — her entire livelihood (panta ton bion). The distinction between surplus giving and sacrificial giving defines true generosity.
The phrase 'all she had to live on' (panta ton bion) parallels Jesus' call to the rich ruler to sell 'everything' (18:22). What the ruler could not do, this widow does voluntarily. She embodies the radical trust Jesus has been teaching throughout Luke 18-21.
Jesus explains the theological basis for His evaluation, contrasting surplus giving with total sacrifice.
The explanation is devastating: the rich gave what they'd never miss; the widow gave what she couldn't afford to lose. She gave everything — all she had to live on — making her the most generous person in the temple that day, and perhaps any day.

5As some of the disciples were remarking how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and consecrated gifts, Jesus said,
6“As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.”
