Jesus reframes persecution as opportunity: 'This will be your opportunity to serve as witnesses' (apobēsetai hymin eis martyrion). The word martyrion ('testimony/witness') foreshadows both witness and martyrdom.

Language and setting

The Greek martyrion carries the dual meaning that would later develop into 'martyrdom' — witness through testimony that may cost one's life. Luke develops this theme extensively in Acts.
