The scholarly reading

Before the cosmic signs, Jesus warns of personal persecution: believers will be seized, persecuted, delivered to synagogues and prisons, and brought before kings and governors — all 'on account of My name' (heneken tou onomatos mou).

Language and setting

The phrase 'before all this' (pro de toutōn pantōn) places persecution chronologically before the cosmic signs. This is fulfilled in Acts, where the apostles face exactly these trials (Acts 4-5, 12, 21-26).

Jesus warns His disciples of the personal persecution they will face before the end-times events unfold.

Significance

Jesus brings the prophecy home: before the world shakes, you will shake. Arrests, trials, imprisonment — not because you did wrong, but because you bear His name. The cost of discipleship is about to become very real.
