Religion can become a costume and a stage. Jesus is warning that some religious leaders care more about looking important than actually serving God and people.
Jesus warns His followers about religious leaders who use their positions for personal status.
Jesus paints a picture: look at how they dress, where they sit, how they expect to be treated. When religion becomes about you instead of God, something has gone terribly wrong.
Jesus catalogs the scribes' sins: desire for conspicuous clothing (stolais), public recognition (aspasmous), and places of honor (prōtokathedrias, prōtoklisias) in synagogues and banquets. These reveal a leadership motivated by status, not service.
Long robes (stolai) were a mark of the leisure class and scholarly status. The love of greetings, chief seats, and places of honor exposes a religion performed for human admiration rather than divine service — the same vice targeted in 18:9-14.
