Everyone wrote Zacchaeus off as a traitor and a sinner. Jesus writes him back in as a true child of God's promise. That's what salvation does — it restores you to the family.

The scholarly reading

Jesus declares that 'salvation has come' (sōtēria egeneto) to Zacchaeus' household, affirming his identity as a 'son of Abraham' — a member of the covenant community despite his sinful profession.

Language and setting

Calling Zacchaeus a 'son of Abraham' is both genealogical and theological — it restores him to his covenant identity from which his profession had socially excluded him. 'Today' (sēmeron) is a key Lukan salvation word (2:11, 4:21, 23:43).

Jesus pronounces salvific blessing over Zacchaeus and his household, vindicating his inclusion in God's people.

Significance

Jesus declares Zacchaeus saved and restored to Abraham's family. The man the crowd called a sinner is now publicly proclaimed a true son of the covenant. Salvation came to his house because it came to his heart.

7And all who saw this began to grumble, saying, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinful man!”

8But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord, half of my possessions I give to the poor, and if I have cheated anyone, I will repay it fourfold.”

9Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man too is a son of Abraham.

10For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

11While the people were listening to this, Jesus proceeded to tell them a parable, because He was near Jerusalem and they thought the kingdom of God would appear imminently.
