Zacchaeus and the King
saying, “Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here. Luke 19:30 · Berean Standard Bible
Jesus tells them: 'Go into that village, and you'll find a colt tied up that no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here.' He knows exactly what's there waiting.
An unridden colt was set apart for a special purpose. Jesus is choosing to enter Jerusalem not on a war horse but on a humble colt — a king, but not the kind anyone expected.
Jesus gives remarkably specific instructions, revealing His supernatural knowledge or careful planning.
Jesus describes exactly what they'll find before they find it. He's not improvising — He's fulfilling an ancient prophecy about the kind of king God is sending.
Jesus instructs the disciples to find a specific colt (pōlon) that has never been ridden, fulfilling Zechariah 9:9's prophecy of the humble king riding a donkey's colt. The unridden status signifies sacred purpose.
Animals never ridden were considered suitable for sacred use (Numbers 19:2, 1 Samuel 6:7). Jesus' foreknowledge of the colt's location and condition demonstrates prophetic awareness or prior arrangement.
Jesus gives detailed instructions about finding and retrieving a specific colt for His entrance into Jerusalem.
The specificity of Jesus' instructions is striking — exactly where it is, that no one has sat on it, and precisely what to do. He's fulfilling Zechariah's prophecy of the humble king down to the last detail.
28After Jesus had said this, He went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
29As He approached Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, He sent out two of His disciples,
30saying, “Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here.
31If anyone asks, ‘Why are you untying it?’ tell him, ‘The Lord needs it.’”
32So those who were sent went out and found it just as Jesus had told them.
