Jesus is amazed: 'The only one who came back to praise God was this foreigner?' The outsider understood gratitude better than those who should have known better.
This Samaritan wasn't even allowed in the temple — yet he's the one who truly worships. Sometimes the people closest to religion are furthest from gratitude.
Jesus highlights the irony with a question that should make religious people uncomfortable.
The one barred from the temple is the one who truly worships. The people with all the religious advantages missed the moment. The outsider got it.
Jesus intensifies the point: 'no one was found to return... except this foreigner' (ouch heurethēsan hypostrepsantes... ei mē ho allogenēs houtos). The term 'foreigner' (allogenēs) was used on the temple's exclusion sign barring Gentiles from inner courts.
The irony is sharp: the one excluded from the temple ('foreigner') is the one who most fully grasps the theological significance of what God has done — a recurring Lukan theme.
Jesus speaks with a mix of wonder and rebuke, elevating the Samaritan's response as a model of true worship.
