But when someone stronger comes along, he overpowers the guard, takes away all his weapons, and frees everyone. Jesus is saying: I'm the stronger one. Satan's time is up.

This is Jesus' way of explaining every healing and deliverance in His ministry. He's not working with Satan -- He's invading Satan's territory and setting prisoners free.

The scholarly reading

The 'stronger one' (ischyroteros) overpowers Satan, stripping his armor (panoplian) and distributing his plunder (skula). Jesus implicitly identifies Himself as this stronger one who has decisively defeated the devil.

Language and setting

The language of overpowering and plundering echoes Isaiah 53:12, where the Servant of the Lord 'divides the spoil with the strong.' Jesus claims messianic authority over the powers of darkness.

Significance
