The 'strong man' (ho ischuros) represents Satan guarding his domain (aulēn, courtyard/palace). When fully armed (kathōplismenos), his possessions (huparchonta) -- those under demonic bondage -- remain under his control.

This parable draws on Isaiah 49:24-25, where God promises to take captives from the mighty. Jesus identifies Satan as the strong man and His exorcisms as raids on Satan's fortress.
