Jesus establishes a chain of representation: ho akouōn hymōn emou akouei ('whoever listens to you listens to Me'), ho athetōn hymas eme athetei ('whoever rejects you rejects Me'), and whoever rejects Jesus rejects ton aposteilanta me ('the One who sent Me'). The verb atheteō means to set aside, nullify, or treat with contempt.
