Jesus spoke directly to Capernaum: 'Will you be lifted up to heaven? No, you will go down to the depths.' His own home base faced the harshest words.

Why it's here

Capernaum had the most access to Jesus of any city. He lived there, taught there, healed there. And yet they did not truly receive Him. The harshest judgment falls on those who had the greatest opportunity.

Where it sits in the story

Jesus' own city got the sharpest rebuke. Capernaum had more access to Jesus than anywhere else, and they still missed it. Familiarity with God's work is no substitute for responding to it.

The scholarly reading

Jesus addresses Capernaum directly: mē heōs ouranou hypsōthēsē ('will you be exalted to heaven?'), answering heōs tou hadou katabēsē ('you will be brought down to Hades'). The language echoes Isaiah 14:13-15's oracle against the king of Babylon, applying it to Jesus' adopted hometown.

Language and setting

Capernaum served as Jesus' base of operations throughout His Galilean ministry (Luke 4:31). Its exalted position as Jesus' home base makes its unbelief the most grievous. The Isaiah allusion compares Capernaum's spiritual arrogance to Babylon's cosmic pretensions.

Significance

Jesus reserved His most dramatic judgment for Capernaum, His own ministry headquarters, asking rhetorically whether it expected to reach heaven, then declaring it would descend to Hades for its unbelief despite unparalleled proximity to Jesus.

13Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.

14But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you.

15And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted up to heaven? No, you will be brought down to Hades!

16Whoever listens to you listens to Me; whoever rejects you rejects Me; and whoever rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me.”

17The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in Your name.”
