John 8:54, in plain English

Jesus answers indirectly: if He glorifies Himself, it is nothing (ouden estin). His Father, whom they claim as their God (hon humeis legete hoti Theos hēmōn estin), is the one who glorifies Him.

Language and setting

Jesus deflects self-glorification while asserting that the God they claim to worship is the very one who glorifies Him, creating an impossible dilemma: either accept Jesus or admit they do not know the God they claim.

Significance

Jesus does not grab glory for Himself. He points to the Father. But the devastating twist is that their God, the one they claim to serve, is the very one who glorifies Jesus. They cannot have it both ways.
