The scholarly reading

The crowd challenges Jesus with a question about comparative greatness: mē su meizōn ei tou patros hēmōn Abraam (surely You are not greater than our father Abraham?), a question that expects a negative answer but whose true answer is emphatically yes.

Language and setting

The question parallels the Samaritan woman's question about Jacob (4:12). In both cases, the question is asked expecting no, but the correct answer is a resounding yes. Jesus is infinitely greater than Abraham.

The crowd poses a question about Jesus' comparative status with Abraham, unintentionally setting up Jesus' definitive I AM declaration.
