This is one of the loneliest details in the Gospels. The people who knew Jesus best did not yet trust Him. But this is not the end of the story for them.

The scholarly reading

The narrator provides the theological explanation for the brothers' misguided advice: oude gar hoi adelphoi autou episteuon eis auton (for not even His brothers believed in Him), revealing familial unbelief.

Language and setting

This parenthetical note is remarkable given that James and Jude later became leaders in the early church (Acts 15:13; Jude 1:1). Their post-resurrection transformation underscores the power of the resurrection as evidence.

The narrator interjects with an editorial comment explaining the spiritual condition underlying the brothers' worldly counsel.

Significance

The tragedy of proximity without faith: Jesus' own brothers shared a home with Him yet did not believe. Their later conversion after the resurrection makes this present unbelief all the more poignant.
