The scholarly reading

Jesus distinguishes His kairos (appointed time) from their kairos (which is always ready/opportune), asserting that His actions are governed by a divine timetable that has not yet reached its appointed moment.

Language and setting

The concept of kairos (divinely appointed time) versus chronos (ordinary time) is central to Johannine theology. Jesus' hour (hōra) is repeatedly referenced as not yet come until the passion (cf. 2:4; 7:30; 8:20).
