Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, speaks up and brings a small detail to Jesus' attention. He has found a boy with some food.
Andrew is always the one bringing people or things to Jesus. It is his defining characteristic, and it is exactly what the moment needs.
Andrew takes a small step of faith by bringing what he has found to Jesus, even though it seems woefully inadequate.
Andrew does not have a solution, but he has something: a tiny offering brought to the right person. And that is all Jesus needs.
Andrew, identified as 'Simon Peter's brother,' offers a tentative alternative. His introduction of the boy's lunch shows slightly more openness than Philip's flat rejection, though his question in the next verse reveals doubt about its sufficiency.
Andrew appears three times in John's Gospel (1:40-42; 6:8-9; 12:22), and each time he is bringing someone or something to Jesus. This pattern characterizes him as a bridge-builder and intermediary.
Andrew speaks up, bringing what little is available to Jesus' attention, displaying his characteristic role as someone who brings things to Jesus.
Andrew does what Andrew always does: he brings something to Jesus. It is not much, just a boy's lunch, but he brings it. Sometimes the most faithful thing you can do is bring what little you have to Jesus.
6But He was asking this to test him, for He knew what He was about to do.
7Philip answered, “Two hundred denarii would not buy enough bread for each of them to have a small piece.”
8One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him,
9“Here is a boy with five barley loaves and two small fish. But what difference will these make among so many?”
10“Have the people sit down,” Jesus said. Now there was plenty of grass in that place, so the men sat down, about five thousand of them.
