The scholarly reading

Philip calculates that 'two hundred denarii' (diakosiōn dēnariōn), approximately eight months' wages for a day laborer, would be insufficient for each person to have even 'a little' (brachu ti). His response is purely mathematical, failing the faith test.

Language and setting

Philip's calculation-driven response represents the natural human tendency to assess divine possibilities through material limitations. His answer, while mathematically sound, misses the theological point entirely.
