Andrew is honest about how little it seems. Five loaves and two fish for five thousand people? The math does not work. But with Jesus, it does not need to.

Do not overlook the boy. He could have kept his lunch for himself. Instead, he gave everything he had, and Jesus turned it into enough for thousands. Never underestimate what God can do with your small offering.

The scholarly reading

The boy's lunch consists of five barley loaves (pente artous krithinous) and two small fish (duo opsaria). Barley was the poor person's grain, and the diminutive opsaria suggests small dried or pickled fish. Andrew's question 'What difference will these make?' (alla tauta ti estin eis tosoutous) expresses practical doubt.

Language and setting

The barley bread connection to the Elisha miracle in 2 Kings 4:42-44 (where twenty barley loaves fed a hundred men with leftovers) creates a deliberate prophetic parallel, with Jesus performing an exponentially greater version of the same miracle.

Andrew presents the meager resources while expressing doubt about their adequacy, unknowingly providing the raw material for Jesus' greatest public miracle.

Significance
