The scholarly reading

A strong wind (anemos megas) causes the sea to become agitated (diēgeireto). The Sea of Galilee's geography, surrounded by hills with narrow valleys, creates conditions where sudden, violent storms can arise without warning.

Language and setting

The storm on the sea echoes Old Testament theophanies where God demonstrates power over chaotic waters (Psalm 107:23-32; Jonah 1:4). The sea in Jewish thought often represented chaos and danger that only God could control.

The narrator describes the natural threat that adds to the disciples' already vulnerable situation.

Significance
