John 6:19, in plain English

After rowing about three or four miles, the disciples looked up and saw Jesus walking on the water toward them. They were terrified.

Why it's here

Walking on water was something only God could do in Jewish understanding. The disciples were not just seeing a miracle; they were seeing a revelation of who Jesus truly is.

Who's speaking

The Gospel writer describes the moment the disciples see something impossible: Jesus defying nature itself to come to them.

Where it sits in the story

In the darkest moment of the storm, Jesus appears. Not in a boat. Not swimming. Walking on the very waves that are threatening to sink them. It is terrifying and beautiful all at once.

The scholarly reading

After rowing about 'twenty-five or thirty stadia' (3-4 miles, roughly halfway across the lake), the disciples see Jesus walking on the sea (peripatounta epi tēs thalassēs). Their terror (ephobēthēsan) is the natural response to a theophanic appearance.

Language and setting

Walking on the sea is a divine prerogative in the Old Testament. Job 9:8 declares that God alone 'treads on the waves of the sea,' and Psalm 77:19 says 'Your path led through the sea.' Jesus' action is an implicit claim to deity.

Voice

The narrator describes the miraculous appearance of Jesus walking on the storm-tossed sea, provoking terror in the disciples.

Significance

In the middle of the lake, in the middle of the storm, in the middle of the night, the disciples see a figure walking toward them on the water. Their terror is understandable: only God walks on the sea.

17got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was already dark, and Jesus had not yet gone out to them.

18A strong wind was blowing, and the sea grew agitated.

19When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the sea—and they were terrified.

20But Jesus spoke up: “It is I; do not be afraid.”

21Then they were willing to take Him into the boat, and at once the boat reached the shore where they were heading.
