The disciples embark for Capernaum. The narrator emphasizes two ominous details: it was already dark (skotia ēdē egegenei) and Jesus had not yet come to them (oupō elēluthei pros autous ho Iēsous). Darkness in John's Gospel consistently carries symbolic weight.

Language and setting

Johannine 'darkness' (skotia) symbolizes spiritual danger and the absence of the Light (1:5; 3:19; 8:12; 12:35). The disciples' literal darkness mirrors their spiritual vulnerability without Jesus' presence.

Voice

The narrator builds tension through two details that carry both literal and symbolic weight: physical darkness and Jesus' physical absence.

Significance
