Jesus says they study the Scriptures carefully because they think the Scriptures give them eternal life. But those very Scriptures are all about Him, and they are missing it.
Imagine spending your whole life reading a treasure map and never finding the treasure because you are too busy studying the map itself. That is what is happening here.
Jesus reveals the tragic irony: the book they have devoted their lives to studying is pointing directly at Him, and they refuse to see it.
The Bible is not just a book of rules or history. It is a story that points to Jesus. If you read it and miss Him, you have missed the entire point.
The verb eraunate ('you search/pore over') may be imperative ('Search the Scriptures!') or indicative ('You search the Scriptures'). The indicative reading fits the context better: they study Scripture believing it gives eternal life, but those very Scriptures testify (marturousai) about Jesus.
This is a pivotal irony in John's Gospel: the authorities' devotion to Scripture should have led them to Jesus, since the entire Old Testament points to Him. Their failure to see this connection indicts their method of reading, not the text itself.
Jesus confronts the authorities with the supreme irony: the Scriptures they revere as the path to eternal life are the very witnesses they are ignoring.
The authorities search the Scriptures with tireless dedication, believing they contain the key to eternal life. And they are right, but they miss the fact that every page points to the person standing before them.
37And the Father who sent Me has Himself testified about Me. You have never heard His voice nor seen His form,
38nor does His word abide in you, because you do not believe the One He sent.
