The scholarly reading

God's word (logon) does not 'abide' (menonta, from menō) in them because they do not believe the one God sent. The key Johannine term menō ('abide/remain') indicates that God's word has no permanent dwelling in their hearts despite their external religious devotion.

Language and setting

This verse connects rejection of Jesus to the absence of God's indwelling word. Their theological knowledge was external and academic, never internalized through the faith and obedience that would have led them to recognize Jesus.

Jesus diagnoses the root cause of their unbelief: God's word has not taken root in their hearts.

Significance

The authorities studied the Scriptures daily, but the word never penetrated their hearts. Their rejection of Jesus is not a surface-level mistake but evidence of a deep spiritual disconnection from the very God whose word they claimed to protect.

36But I have testimony more substantial than that of John. For the works that the Father has given Me to accomplish—the very works I am doing—testify about Me that the Father has sent Me.

37And the Father who sent Me has Himself testified about Me. You have never heard His voice nor seen His form,

38nor does His word abide in you, because you do not believe the One He sent.

39You pore over the Scriptures because you presume that by them you possess eternal life. These are the very words that testify about Me,

40yet you refuse to come to Me to have life.
