Despite the Scriptures' testimony, they 'refuse' (ou thelete, literally 'you are not willing') to come to Jesus to have life (zōēn). The issue is not intellectual inability but volitional refusal; they will not come because they do not want to.

The verb thelete ('you will/want') makes the rejection a matter of will, not understanding. They have sufficient evidence but choose not to believe, a distinction John consistently makes between ignorance and willful rejection.
