Jesus responds, 'Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will never believe.' He is not refusing to help; He is challenging the official to a deeper kind of faith.
This sounds harsh, but Jesus is actually doing the official a favor. He is pushing him past miracle-seeking to genuine trust in Jesus' word.
Jesus speaks to the crowd as much as to the official, addressing the shallow faith that only believes when it sees something spectacular.
Sometimes Jesus pushes back on our requests not because He does not care, but because He wants to give us something better than what we are asking for. He wants this man's faith, not just his gratitude.
Jesus' statement addresses the broader Galilean audience ('you people,' plural humeis), not just the official, rebuking a faith contingent on 'signs and wonders' (sēmeia kai terata). This phrase, common in the Synoptics, appears only here in John.
The rebuke contrasts Galilean sign-dependent faith with the Samaritans' word-based faith (4:39-42). Jesus challenges the official to move beyond miracle-demanding faith to trust in His word alone.

Jesus does not immediately comply with the request. Instead, He challenges the assumption that faith must be sustained by miraculous evidence. This seeming rebuff is actually an invitation to a deeper kind of trust.
46So once again He came to Cana in Galilee, where He had turned the water into wine. And there was a royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum.
47When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went and begged Him to come down and heal his son, who was about to die.
48Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will never believe.”
49“Sir,” the official said, “come down before my child dies.”
50“Go,” said Jesus. “Your son will live.”
