Meanwhile, the disciples are trying to get Jesus to eat something. They have no idea what just happened while they were gone.
The contrast is almost humorous: an entire town is heading toward Jesus because of a spiritual breakthrough, and the disciples are worried about lunch.
The disciples speak out of genuine concern for Jesus' physical wellbeing, completely unaware of the spiritual harvest happening around them.
It is a relatable moment. The disciples are focused on the practical and immediate while Jesus is seeing the bigger picture. Sometimes the most important things happening around you are the ones you are least aware of.
Meanwhile (en tō metaxu), the disciples urge Jesus to eat, using the address 'Rabbi' which signifies their respect for Him as teacher. The scene creates a parallel between physical and spiritual sustenance.
The disciples' concern with food contrasts with Jesus' just-completed spiritual conversation, setting up another Johannine misunderstanding dialogue about the nature of true nourishment.
The disciples speak, concerned about Jesus' physical needs, unaware that He has been engaged in work that nourishes Him in ways they do not yet understand.

33So the disciples asked one another, “Could someone have brought Him food?”
