The scholarly reading

The townspeople respond to the woman's testimony by leaving the town and making their way (erchonto, imperfect tense indicating a procession) toward Jesus. The initiative comes from a communal decision to investigate her claims.

Language and setting

The movement of the Samaritans toward Jesus prefigures the ingathering of non-Jewish peoples, a theme central to John's theology (cf. John 10:16, 'other sheep'; 12:32, 'draw all people').

Significance
