Everyone who practices evil hates (misei) the Light and avoids it, fearing that their deeds will be exposed (Greek: elenchthē, 'reproved, convicted').

Language and setting

The verb elenchō means not merely 'expose' but 'convict' — the light reveals sin for what it is, producing moral accountability. Evil-doers avoid the light to escape this convicting function.
