In contrast, the one who practices truth (Greek: ho poiōn tēn alētheian, 'the one doing the truth') comes to the Light, so that it becomes evident that his deeds have been accomplished in God (en theō).

Language and setting

The phrase 'doing the truth' reflects Semitic idiom (cf. 1QS 1:5 in the Dead Sea Scrolls) — truth is not merely believed but practiced. Living in alignment with truth naturally moves one toward the Light.

Jesus describes those who come to the light: people who practice truth and whose works are done in God.

Significance

The counterpart to those who flee the light: those who live truthfully are drawn to it. Their works, accomplished 'in God,' can withstand the light's scrutiny and are found to be genuine.

19And this is the verdict: The Light has come into the world, but men loved the darkness rather than the Light because their deeds were evil.

20Everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come into the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.
