The scholarly reading

The verdict (Greek: krisis, 'judgment, decision') is this: the Light has come into the world, but people loved (ēgapēsan) the darkness rather than the Light because their deeds were evil.

Language and setting

The light/darkness dualism from the prologue (1:4-5) returns. The verb agapaō ('loved') is startling — people don't merely tolerate darkness but actively love it, preferring it to the light.

Voice

Jesus explains that judgment consists in humanity's active preference for darkness over light.

Significance

The condemnation is not arbitrary but self-chosen: when light and darkness are both available, people choose darkness because it conceals their evil. Moral condition determines theological response.
