The Towel and the Basin
He came to Simon Peter, who asked Him, “Lord, are You going to wash my feet?” John 13:6 · Berean Standard Bible
When Jesus comes to Peter, Peter is stunned. 'Lord, You are going to wash my feet?' He cannot wrap his mind around his Master serving him like this.
Peter's reaction is completely understandable. It would be like a king kneeling to shine your shoes. The dissonance between Jesus' identity and His action is exactly the point.
Peter speaks up with characteristic boldness, questioning what Jesus is doing.
You can hear the disbelief in Peter's voice. He has seen Jesus calm storms and heal the blind. And now this same Jesus is kneeling before him with a basin of water. It doesn't compute. But Jesus is about to show him that this is exactly who He is.
Peter's emphatic question uses the pronoun 'You' (sy) in an emphatic position, highlighting the incongruity: 'You, Lord, wash my feet?' The contrast between Peter's reverence and Jesus' humility creates the dramatic tension.
Peter's reaction reflects a correct understanding of social hierarchy but an incomplete understanding of Jesus' mission. His objection will become the occasion for deeper teaching.

When Jesus reaches Peter, the outspoken disciple cannot contain himself. The emphasis falls on the shocking reversal: You, the Lord, are going to wash my feet? Peter grasps the social impropriety but not the theological significance of what Jesus is doing.
4So He got up from the supper, laid aside His outer garments, and wrapped a towel around His waist.
5After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and dry them with the towel that was around Him.
6He came to Simon Peter, who asked Him, “Lord, are You going to wash my feet?”
7Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”
8“Never shall You wash my feet!” Peter told Him.
