Why it's here

Foot washing was so lowly that even Jewish servants were not required to do it. It was left for the lowest-ranking person in the household. Jesus deliberately chose the most humbling act possible.

The scholarly reading

Jesus performs the foot washing (niptein tous podas), the task of the lowest household servant. The imperfect tense 'began to wash' (ērxato niptein) indicates He washed multiple disciples' feet in succession.

Language and setting

Foot washing was considered so menial that Jewish servants could decline to perform it; it was typically assigned to Gentile slaves. Jesus' action therefore transcends even normal servanthood.
