The Towel and the Basin

The disciple Jesus loved most dearly was reclining right next to Him at the table, in the place of closest friendship and trust.
This is likely John himself, writing about his own experience. His position next to Jesus gave him a front-row seat to what was about to happen and the ability to ask Jesus private questions.
John describes his own position at the table in his characteristic third-person style.
In that tense room, one disciple is close enough to lean back against Jesus and whisper. He is in the place of deepest friendship, and that closeness is about to make him the conduit for one of the most dramatic moments in the Gospel.
John introduces 'the disciple whom Jesus loved' (hon ēgapa ho Iēsous), traditionally identified as John himself. His position 'reclining at Jesus' side' (en tō kolpō) indicates a place of honor and intimacy at the meal.
The phrase 'in the bosom' (en tō kolpō) mirrors John 1:18, where the Son is 'in the bosom' of the Father. This beloved disciple enjoys the same intimacy with Jesus that Jesus has with the Father.
John introduces the beloved disciple in his characteristic anonymous, self-referential style.
The beloved disciple reclines next to Jesus in the position of closest intimacy, just as the Son dwells in intimate closeness with the Father. His physical proximity gives him access to whisper privately with Jesus, which Peter is about to exploit.
21After Jesus had said this, He became troubled in spirit and testified, “Truly, truly, I tell you, one of you will betray Me.”
22The disciples looked at one another, perplexed as to which of them He meant.

24So Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus which one He was talking about.
25Leaning back against Jesus, he asked, “Lord, who is it?”
